John Frick is Ph.D. in Performance Studies, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. He is the author of New York’s First Theatrical Center: The Rialto at Union Square and Theatre, Culture and Temperance Reform in Nineteenth-Century America {Cambridge University Press}; and is co-editor of The Directory of Historic American Theatres and Theatrical Directors: A Biographical Dictionary. He is currently writing two books: The Theatre and the City: Representations of the Metropolis on the American Stage and Staging Tom: Uncle Tom's Cabin on the American Stage and Screen. Dr. Frick has published articles and reviews in Theatre Journal; The Drama Review; The Journal of American Drama and Theatre; The New England Theatre Journal; New Theatre Quarterly; Nineteenth Century Theatre and Film; Theatre Symposium; The American Historical Review; The Social History of Alcohol Review; Alcohol and Temperance in Modern History: An International Encyclopedia; The Encyclopedia of Modern Drama; The Encyclopedia of New York City; Realism and the American Dramatic Tradition; Encyclopedia of American Urban History; and The Cambridge History of the American Theatre. He has entries on the Uncle Tom's Cabin & American Culture and the Circus in America websites and has articles pending in Edwin Forrest's New York: Drama and Politics in the 19th Century City and in a book titled Thinking of Reading. Dr. Frick is Past Editor of the journal Theatre Symposium and is currently President of the American Theatre and Drama Society. While in New York, he worked Off-Off Broadway as a dramaturg and as a stage manager with theatre and dance companies.
